Are you expecting a tax rebate that seems to delayed?. Learn here what may be happening and how you can find out.
Income Tax Rebate
During the months of May and June, every individual has to file the tax forms for all his revenues during the previous year. At that time it may come to light that more tax than necessary was paid in the form of “retentions” or otherwise.
At this time, you can apply for a rebate.
The Tax Office has a legal period of 6 months to refund the money. Sometimes, if you are one of the to notify the tax office, you could get your refund within a few weeks. But this is most likely not going to happen with those whose source of income and tax holdings are well known to Hacienda and they have no doubt that the rebate will be due.
In the case of a business, the application of a rebate may trigger an investigation of the expenses declared to see that legitimate expenses have been included. Of course, it is impossible to make a thorough investigate of everyone.
If you wonder why your refund is taking too long notice the following tips.
- It might be that the tax Agency has requested more information from you before ordering the refund. If you missed the letter the case is put on hold until you answer it.
- The tax office may have found some errors in your tax declaration and it has sent you a “proposal of refund” with the new figure. Once again, if you do not reply either agreeing or providing further allegations the case is put on hold.
- You may be the unlucky one who gets paid the last!. Hacienda pays the refund with tax collection of the subsequent quarters. For example, once the 3rd quarter is filed (after 20th of October) they may have many rebates pending.
- Your refund, though granted, has not reached you because it has been used to pay other outstanding debts with Hacienda, Traffic Fines, or Social Security. You will be notified about this by letter.
How can you find out?
- If you speak Spanish you can call 901 33 55 33 to inquire about the State of your Refund. (“Estado de la Devolución”)
- You can use your digital signature to access the Virtual Office of Hacienda to inquire about the state of your case. Click here to access ( DS required) If there is any communication or notification you will be able to download it.
- You can ask for an appointment with the Tax Agency to inquire.
IVA rebate.
The time to apply for the rebate of any balance in your favor of the IVA account is in January.
Once more, the tax office has 6 months to return or require any additional information.
In this case, there is no provision to inquire online about the state of the file. An appointment is necessary to find out.
It is a good to make sure that you have a valid notification address so as not to miss an important email. Additionally, those who have a Digital Signature can access the Virtual Office and be notified of a letter pending to be delivered.
