Getting your NIE, or Numero de Identidad de Extranjero, is an essential step if you plan to start a business, work or live in Spain.
This unique identification number also acts as your tax identification number and is required for opening bank accounts, registering as self-employed, or setting up a company.

Why do you need a NIE?
A NIE is a tax identification number for foreigners in Spain.
It is required for many legal, tax and administrative activities.
- Registering as a resident in Spain.
- Paying taxes and Social Security.
- Buying or renting property.
- Opening a Spanish bank account.
- Setting up utilities such as electricity and water.
- Registering as self-employed or incorporating a company.
Steps to obtain your NIE
The process normally includes the following steps.
1. Complete the EX-15 application form
The EX-15 form is the official document used to request a NIE.
You can download it online or obtain a copy from the relevant foreigners' office.
In the form, clearly state your reason for needing a NIE. Valid reasons can include registering as self-employed, purchasing property or a car, starting a business or signing an employment contract.
2. Pay the NIE application fee
The NIE application fee is paid through Modelo 790.
The exact amount can change, so check the current fee when preparing the form.
- Download and complete Modelo 790.
- Select the option for assignment of a NIE at the applicant's request.
- Use your passport number in the NIE field if you do not have a NIE yet.
- Pay the fee at a Spanish bank and keep the stamped receipt.
3. Prepare your supporting documents
At your appointment, you will normally need to provide the following documents.
- Original and photocopy of your passport.
- Completed EX-15 form.
- Stamped receipt of payment for Modelo 790.
- Documents justifying your request for a NIE.
Examples of supporting documents include proof of intended business activity if you need the NIE to register as self-employed, a proforma invoice or car document if buying a vehicle, a certificate reserving your company name if starting a company, or a job offer letter if the reason is employment.
4. Attend your appointment
Visit your local foreigners' office or Spanish consulate with all your documents.
Depending on the location, they may issue your NIE on the same day or ask you to return after a few days to collect it.
Some offices require an appointment, known as cita previa, while others may operate differently. Check the process in advance for your location.
